Species Name - Wholken

Species Appearance - Looks very similar to a bipedal Kangaroo Rat with a slightly longer, more kangaroo body. Around their necks, are large fluffy manes like that of a male lion. The females manes are much longer, and have several different dressage items in them. Mostly jewelry. The males have tufts at the ends of their tails, while the females do not. Wholkens have large, black eyes, and during the day or when in contact with light, the black shrinks like a pupil, and is surrounded by color similar to an iris. Wholkens are mammals, and are about the size of a 5 year old. That's about as tall as they get. Just like humans, the males and females reproduce the same. The time for the infant to be born however is only four months.

About the Species - The Wholkens evolved from small shrew like animals, and grew to be in small tribes of 30. Eventually, they'd grown to learn things about farming, and mining, and more. Technology took years for them to master, but they still preferred a smaller, tribal lifestyle. Voyages into space weren't really for them, although they would occasionally go into orbit to visit neighboring planets. They have several tribes on these planets, though they are mainly used for the animals and resources on them. They are very social species, and love communicating with others. They are very clean species, and groom themselves often, and let others groom them. Water is a most enjoyable resource to them, as it helps clean away what they can't brush or pick out. They do not walk, or crawl. Instead, they give little hops and bounds to get from place to place. Sleeping is basically huddling into small family piles, as a small tactic to keeping warmth contained.

Origin/Home world - Liowe (pronounced Le-ow-ee) is the home planet that their species originated from. It has small forests, and lots of water. The planet only has a single season, which is Winter. It's always snowing, and there are no reptilian or water creatures. Mammals and birds are common however. Most of the water on the planet is frozen, and dehydration is common if a Wholken does not know how to get the water. The gravity is a bit more powerful than the earths, and it takes a bit more effort to move around. This makes the Wholkens more fit, even with their small size. The vegetation on Liowe has fruit. No matter the plant, there is something edible growing on them.

Intelligence/Technology - The Wholken are intelligent creatures. They've got good common sense, and amazing skills in survival. Their technology are simple, small pods than can fit one Wholken each. That's about all the technology they have.

Notable Individuals - The species in a whole is ruled by a single Dame (queen). She is known as Lamis. Lamis is a soft ruler, meaning she is sympathetic. Aggression isn't a part of the species, and she likes that. Lamis is an Albino. She cannot reproduce, and has pink eyes, and almost angelic white fur.

Hostility - The Wholken species are mostly passive creatures. They aren't very aggressive unless something were to annoy them. For example, if another species were to mess with their tail or mane, they would become irritable.

Diet - Wholkens are strictly vegetarian. They have no meat in their diet. Fruits are the main keys in their diet, though vegetables of sorts are eaten. Just eating any leaves or plants aren't part of their diet, however, the bark of a tree is. It helps to keep their teeth healthy, and makes the molars stronger, to allow feasting of nuts as well. Nuts are only eaten on the Waning Ceremony.

Reproduction - The reproduction pf Wholkens are somewhat similar to that of humans, and have somewhat of a strange cross with dogs. After mating, the male will become "stuck" for 5-10 minutes. The young are called "pups", and a female who has given birth is called a "nurse". If a female has not mated, they will only be called a "dame". Males are called "toms", until they have mated, which then they will be called "tods". The elderly are called "grams" and "gramps". Unoriginal, but it works.

Domestication - Wholkens tame several different animals, and had managed to tame creatures from the neighboring planets. They raise them as pets, for milk and fur, and eggs. When the animal can no longer survive on it's own, they are put down and butchered, and traded to carnivorous species, along with the eggs they collect, for other types of fruits from other planets and systems.

Colors - The Wholken species are colored naturally The colors are Black, white, brown, tan, roan, red, and basically any natural colors, The patterns really depend. Spots, striped, blotched, and much more. Every now and then, there will be unnatural markings on their pelts, but not often.

How the species interact with one another - Wholkens are very social creatures. They love being around others, especially others of their kind. Going long periods of time without socializing can send them into a state of depression. They used to live in large tribes, but now the tribes have separated, and are just groups of families in different areas. They stay in contact.

Traditions/Customs - The Wholkens have a single tradition, and this is the Waning Ceremony. In this ceremony, the young become adolescents, and the adolescents become adults. The ceremony includes a lot of dancing, or for the Whulkens, hopping around in circles around a fire, and making soft clicking noises. The sounds are only understood by their species, but most the time it is a sign happiness or approval. Nuts from fruits and trees are stored away until the occasion, and are eaten at the end of the ceremony during the dancing, and feasting, and chatter.

Ranks - The Dame (queen), Matriarchs, Elites, Gatherers, Spirit Speakers (healers), Caretaker, and Warriors. The Dame, of course, is the leader of the species. The leader is only females. There is usually an heir to the throne, but if there is not, then the Dame will choose someone of trust to become a future Dame. The Matriarchs are separate leaders for different groups. For different camps that they have, there is a leader for each, also of course, female. The Gatherers are almost self explanatory. They collect the fruits and more for the tribes food storage, and even collect things for the healers. The Spirit Speakers "talk" to the dead, and "see" the past and future. They foretell things and heal injured Wholkens using either forbidden magic, of course forbidden, or just simple healing herbs. The Caretakers, are basically the elders of the clans. They cannot do much after a certain age, and instead put themselves to work taking care of the younger, pups of the generation. They are also the teachers for the young. The Warriors aren't exactly meant for war. They are trained for defense of their tribes. They aren't the best though, but they do stay around the village. Now the Elites, are warriors as well, but they are meant for the more serious work. Killing things that threaten the villages and more is part of their job. They escort others to the neighboring planets, and even go out on very short expeditions.
There's a very small amount of mature stuff, but it's not too graphic. I'll try my best to have a full art ref of the species soon, but my personal confidence in my art has really lowered this year..
