He just has a horrible obsession with hurting himself and his own blood, as well as other peoples blood.
Plus being a Zod that was locked in an insane asylum for like a long time, kind of did him in and he and his siblings went insane.
Anyways, he LOVES red things and girls hair along with blood, as you can see.
